Investigative Journalism

As chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association (HFA), Gail has documented violations against animals by visiting animal operations, befriending workers, drafting extensive affidavits, photographing and videotaping crimes, and then fighting tooth and nail to get these crimes exposed and prosecuted.

Gail has worked tirelessly throughout her career to expose violations in slaughterhouses and factory farms. When mainstream television networks refused to air her findings, deeming the footage "too disgusting," she turned to written media. Gail has written scores of articles for publications (such as the New York Times), been interviewed by various mainstream radio and television outlets, and been profiled in U.S. News & World Report.

Gail's investigative work has had tangible impacts on legislation governing the treatment of animals. A front-page Washington Post story covering violations documented by Gail outraged Congress, resulting in a multi-million-dollar appropriation for enforcement of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act--a zero-budgeted law that had been on the books for more than forty years.

Gail is the author of two in-depth, comprehensively reported books (Slaughterhouse and Out of Sight), which have been (and continue to be) extensively reviewed in the media.
